Did you know we offer a FREE sore throat test to identify Strep A throat infections?
Most sore throats are caused by a virus that will clear over time but occasionally sore throats are caused by a bacterial infection like Streptococcus A (Strep A). Either way, it can be uncomfortable and prove hard to talk, eat and drink – check out our advice below on recommended ways to ease your symptoms.
Sore throats and the associated pain are very common and GPs regularly see patients looking for the fastest remedy. That’s why at Lindsay & Gilmour we are now offering a free sore throat test. We hope to not only ease the burden on GPs and reduce the use of unnecessary antibiotics but we want to make it as easy as possible for you to seek advice and treatment at a time and venue to suit you!
We can test and treat you and your family today
This is a walk-in, on the spot service that takes minutes to complete – from filling in a short questionnaire to an examination by a pharmacist in one of our private consultation rooms. We can then assess the need for a sore throat swab, to test for a bacterial throat infection.*
If the test result is positive then an antibiotic will be prescribed at a cost of £5. If you don’t need an antibiotic we can provide you with the most appropriate advice and treatment.
The NHS Minor Ailment Service is available at our pharmacies and can help you access free medication for a minor illness or complaint at no cost to you. Click here to find out more about who can use this service and how to register with your local pharmacy.

We can help you to get back to your normal self as soon as possible with this simple and convenient test and treat service.

Tips to ease the symptoms of a sore throat
Whether due to a virus or bacteria, it is worth trying the following to ease your symptoms:
- Salt water gargle (or adults could try gargling a soluble aspirin before swallowing it – speak to your pharmacist for advice)
- Keep hydrated, alcohol and caffeine should be avoided and replaced with water. Try some honey too
- If you have a fever take paracetamol to reduce your temperature. Take a look at the other over the counter medication designed to help sore throat symptoms, including a throat spray
- Try a humidifier or a steam shower
- Avoid smoking
