Speaking to Marta, she’s clearly very passionate about her work. But she’s also a pragmatist, she told us “not every day is easy, pharmacy is tough at the moment, but I know better times lie ahead.”

Marta Orkisz was 16 when she arrived in Scotland with her parents and started at Lindsay & Gilmour Leith Walk, while studying at Edinburgh College. Now, almost a decade on, she’s a much-liked and well-respected Pharmacy Manager at our branch in Dalkeith.

“Marta is one of my most trusted branch managers.  She runs her branches to exceptionally high standards and I know I can rely on her for support with wider business initiatives.  She leads with care for her customers, colleagues, and the business, and always strives to continually improve herself and her branch." - Kirstin Bowden, Area Manager, Lindsay & Gilmour Pharmacy.

Marta’s story is similar to many working in the health sector. She was attracted to a job that allowed her to help and care for others. But she’s also ambitious, touching on the importance of being employed by a business where growth and progression are encouraged and supported. Marta’s journey from trainee to manager has supported life goals and milestones such as buying her first home.

“I moved to Scotland with my parents in 2010. I always loved science and math at school and was good at those subjects. When I applied to college to study Pharmacy Services, I knew right away (at the application interview) that this was the career for me!

My college course required me to secure work experience. I was fortunate to join the team at Lindsay & Gilmour Leith Walk two days per week while I was studying. After that, I extended my hours and was supported through my pharmacy technician training, before moving to the Crewe Road branch. This move allowed me to complete my Accuracy Technician qualification in 2017, funded by Lindsay & Gilmour.

Crewe Road was a great opportunity to work and learn in a busy, fast-paced pharmacy. There was no such thing as an average day but I enjoyed the work, I enjoyed the responsibility and after covering my manager’s maternity leave, I was promoted initially to share the role and then offered the post full-time.”

Marta has very recently been appointed the role of Pharmacy Manager at Lindsay & Gilmour Dalkeith. This is closer to home for Marta and provided a fresh challenge, after almost a decade working in pharmacy.

“I have to say, my last two visits to the chemist have been seamless…and after speaking to people, they agree with my opinion. Well done.” - Lindsay & Gilmour Patient, Dalkeith.

Whether you're considering a career move or your first job, perhaps the prescription to your success could lie in a fulfilling role in community pharmacy.

“Lindsay & Gilmour offered me my first job. I started as a trainee and have worked hard over the last 9 years to progress my career in pharmacy. I feel proud when I reflect on how far I’ve come and take comfort in knowing I am valued. But my journey doesn’t end here, there is more I have to offer and I’m already exploring the next stage of my career with Lindsay & Gilmour Pharmacy.”
